Tensions Rise Between India and Pakistan

Tensions between India and Pakistan are escalating after a militant attack which killed more than 40 Indian troops in disputed Kashmir on 14 February 2019.

It is claimed 40 paramilitary police were killed during the suicide attack on an Indian security convoy in Pulwama in Indian administered Kashmir. Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) a Pakistan-based militant group, have claimed responsibility for what is described as being the worst attack in decades.

Despite Pakistan denying any involvement in the attack, India retaliated with two air force jets, crossing the de facto border that divides Kashmir targeting a Pakistan militant camp. Pakistan responded by shooting down both Indian fighter jets and successfully captured one of the pilots.

Impact on Shipping

Local correspondents in Pakistan have advised port operations are operating as normal.

However, port officials have warned correspondents in the event of an emergency, any vessel at berth would need to be shifted on an immediate basis. Whilst there hasn’t been any formal notices, correspondents believe any vessel with an Indian crew on board calling to a Pakistan port, may be a cause for concern under current tensions.

For further information, shipowners and ship managers should contact their local P&I correspondents and/or port agents.
